Well it's been blistering hot here for the past couple of days and I can't think of a better way of cooling down than looking at some serious chalet chic.  In addition, my friend Louise and I were chatting today and began our planning for a New Zealand skiing holiday this year.  I love a great winter holiday - in fact my husband and I went to Whistler Blackcomb in Canada for our honeymoon and it was the most magical, romantic place I have ever been to.  I must confess that where we usually stay at Mt Hotham looks nothing like these places, but every time I'm there I find myself daydreaming of what I could do with the place!  I love the warmth, texture and rustic nature of chalet chic.  I also find it a bit of fun.  Sheridan have launched some faux animal fur accessories with their Autumn Winter 2012 collection, so if you feel like some chalet chic at your place this winter, take a leaf out of these seriously stylish places and mix up wood, metal and faux animal fur for a sophisticated chalet look.

Royal Hawaiian Style

The grand entrance of The Royal Hawaiian,
also fondly referred to as Pink Palace of the Pacific.
Part of the recently renovated lobby of the hotel
and possibly my favourite place in Waikiki.
This open air walkway faces the hotels lush tropical gardens.

Royal Ocean Front Suite.  The pink towels have been replaced by
crisp white ones, but the pink and platinum pineapple wallpaper
ensures the pink theme remains entrenched in this hotel.

Stunning Moroccan infused design and decoration in the lobby.

Another view of that marvellous roof.
I'm glad I got a photo with some people in it so you can see
the proportion of the enormous magnificent chandelier.

The impeccable styling continues outdoors.

The perfect place to enjoy a cocktail or two.

I can just see Marilyn Monroe here.

Azure seafood restaurant at The Royal Hawaiian
Twenty years ago, I visited Hawaii with my parents and the most enduring memory of that trip was having breakfast at The Royal Hawaiian.  Returning with my Mum and sister recently, my mother had a quiet tear, welling up with nostalgic memories when we arrived.  How could a hotel evoke such feeling?  Well, this is no run of the mill, cookie cutter hotel for a start.

Opening in 1927 at the cost of $4 million, the Royal Hawaiian was immediately the chosen playground for the rich and famous.  At a time when the island was only accessible via boat, guests would pack heavy and reside at the resort for many weeks.  Over time, the hotel continued to attract high profile guests including the Rockerfellers, The Beatles, Marilyn Monroe, Natalie Wood, Dean Martin and Shirley Temple.  A scandal at the time, the hotel created a non-alcoholic drink for the child star and named it after her.

Built in a Spanish Moorish style, popular in the late 1920's, the hotel's most significant feature is it's salmon colour stucco facade resulting in its fond nickname, The Pink Palace.  The hotel truly is an icon of Waikiki, and as the area became bombarded with modernist development in the 1980's, The Royal Hawaiian proudly stood as a design and architecture monument to a golden era of Hawaii tourism.

In 2010, the hotel was renovated by a design team including interior designers, Philpotts & Associates and WCIT Architects.  Philpots' outstanding work on The Royal Hawaiian resulted in the firm receiving the prestigious Best of Show award from the IIDA* at the Honour Awards & Pioneers in Design Celebration.  The design team have skillfully maintained the 1920's glamour of the hotel and managed to update the layout and furnishings without forsaking any of its distinctive design style.

Bright pink and platinum pineapple wallpaper lines the walls of each headboard to re-envitalize the rooms yet maintain the tradition of the hotel.  The lobby was expanded so it opened up to face the hotel's lush tropical lawn.  Taking inspiration from the private estates in Oahu, the design team incorporated local Koa wood, exotic hardwoods and a global influenced mix of furnishings to create an ultimate luxury experience.  The public areas clearly have a Moroccan design influence infused with Asian and Hawaiian Colonial style.

The seafood restaurant at the hotel, Azure, was designed by Los Angeles designer Terry Henriksen of Henriksen Design Associates.  The restaurant is pure glamour with its white, yellow and black Hollywood regency style, taking its cue from the hotel's rich celebrity history.  The restaurant design cleverly ties in with the hotel scheme with details such as the Moroccan lanterns and Middle Eastern motifs.

The rich and famous now take their tropical holidays on their own private islands, or secluded mansions with tightly held addresses, but you can still visit the The Royal Hawaiian for a true taste of old Hollywood glamour and a superb interior design job.

David Collins, the master of luxury design, has created another masterpiece.  This is the Bassoon Bar at the Corinthia Hotel in London.  I'm loving the circular patterned roof - it's spectacular.  One Kir Royale please bartender....

New York Luxury

The London

The London

The London Penthouse
There are those of the opinion that money spent on luxury accommodation whilst on holiday is a waste of money as you don't spend much time in your room.  Whilst I agree that a good holiday is one where you do spend little time in your room, I do think that money spent on the best accommodation you can afford is well worth it.   For me, part of the whole holiday is the delight and escape of luxury accommodation.  I want to completely flee my normal life while I am on holiday and staying at a beautiful hotel makes me feel special.  At the end of an exhausting day of shopping and site seeing, I want to look forward to my beautiful hotel welcoming me with soft, ridiculously high thread count sheets, amazing views and glittering surfaces.  I want to have a quick lie down, recharge, and then head to the bathroom to glam up for the evening.

I am lucky enough to be staying at The London and the Smyth Tribeca when I go to New York soon.  The penthouse at The London looks spectacular, however the funds could only stretch so far so we will be staying in a regular room!

From a design point of view, I can't wait to see these hotels (and a few others I plan on visiting).  The London's rooms were designed by one of my favourite designers, David Collins.  He also designed Gordon Ramsay's restaurant, Maze, which is located inside The London.

What's news at school

This is the latest mood board that I have completed for school.  I am loving this subject as we are learning about the design elements and principles at the moment and I am finding the work very interesting and useful.  For the above mood board, we had to select an image that we liked and then create a board based on this image.  My image was the central image of the tea cups and I have created a board with a modern sophisticated feeling, such as you would find in an luxury hotel or home.  Whilst the colours and many of the accent shapes are feminine, the straight lines of the chair are masculine and suggest formality.  We have another assignment due next week so more pictures to follow.

Celebrity Style

Candace Bushnell's amazing home

I love the colours and sophistication of this room

Gwyneth Paltrow's stylish kitchen (in one of her many homes)

and here is another one...both are fabulous

Gwyneth's lounge is chic, modern and feminine

Here are two of some of my favourite celebrity homes.  One day I would love to be working for clients such as these.  These rooms are effortlessly chic and stylish and they are traditional whilst still being modern.  They epitomise my design style.
